WAXWINGS IN MACCLESFIELD 10 December 2004

by David Tolliday

Some of the waxwings have rings. The one on the left has a dark green ring over a lime green ring on the left leg. Approximately 300 were colour ringed in Aberdeen during the initial influx of Waxwings into the UK during the end of October and beginning of November. Please report any sightings of waxwings with rings to paulbaxter@severnunival.co.uk

The following is the report received from the Aberdeen ringing group on this bird:

This bird was ringed in Inverurie, a village 20km NW of Aberdeen, on 30/11/04 and hasn't been seen since. This is a great sighting and now brings to 5 the number of colour-ringed birds seen within the last few weeks in NW England. We have had 3 in Lancashire (2 in Burnley and 1 in Barrow) and 1 nearer you in Darley Dale,
Derbyshire.

Away back in 1990, the last time we carried out a similar ringing study on waxwings, it was into February before we had birds as far south and west as this.
