Macclesfield Wildlife Explorers RSPB Phoenix

Macclesfield RSPB Phoenix - Conservation Working Party
on Saturday 8 November 2008

After an unpromising start (and despite the threat of high winds and constant rain) a group of keen conservation volunteers from Macclesfield RSPB Phoenix (ages 12 to 19) joined The RSPB Macclesfield Local Group to transform the RSPB Coombes & Churnet reserve's Education area.
There was an eclectic mix of tasks to attempt and by the end of the afternoon the Education area boasted an array of pitfall traps, beetle buckets and reptile tins. The working party also created an area to showcase ‘Homes for Wildlife’ by constructing and erecting a variety of insect boxes, nestboxes for birds (including a barn owl box), a toad hole, a hedgehog box and even a dormouse box.

All of the volunteers enjoyed a hot barbecue lunch.

The group had lots of fun constructing an artificial badger sett.

Complete with artificial badger.

On behalf of the reserve we would like to thank all of the volunteers for their hard work. The renovations and improvements will have an immediate effect, enriching the experience of education visits for hundreds of children in the years to come.                                     The RSPB Coombes & Churnet Education Team.
