Big Garden Birdwatch 2008

Sunday 27 January 2008

Pikelow Farm in Marton once again hosted our Big Garden Birdwatch meeting. With more than 70 people keen to take part,we split into two groups to complete our bird survey. The weather was kind to us (and the birds!) and we produced a joint bird list featuring an amazing 35 different species.

We saw a huge range of birds: Buzzards circling the fields, Great spotted woodpeckers drumming on the trees, flocks of Tree sparrows at the bird feeders and Mute Swans gliding elegantly across the trout pools. The results from the Big Garden Birdwatch help the RSPB monitor trends in garden bird populations across the UK. This helps to identify which species are doing well or badly and flags up those birds that will benefit from further research and future conservation efforts. We are hoping that over the Big Garden Birdwatch weekend we will have been joined by half a million people across the country as part of the world’s biggest birdwatch.
