Macclesfield RSPB Wildlife Explorers and RSPB Phoenix
trialled new educational activities
and carried out Conservation activities at RSPB Coombes Valley.

A glorious, sunny November day welcomed Macclesfield RSPB Wildlife Explorers and RSPB Phoenix back to RSPB Coombes Valley for a morning trialling education activities and taking part in conservation work.

Wildlife Explorers investigated different areas of the woodland at Coombes Valley.
In the plantation they rolled logs and found (lots of) snails, slugs, woodlice and tiny spiders.
Leaf litter sieving in the log circle revealed some beetle larvae, spider mites and springtails.

Inspired by their finds they then made natural sculptures from leaves,
twigs and berries collected from the wood.

The group then made smelly potions from mixtures of leaves, soil and grass.
Smells were described as 'mushroomy', 'earthy' and even 'disgusting'!

Volunteers from the reserve guided the Phoenix group in their first attempt at some conservation coppicing.

Using loppers and bow saws birch trees were cleared and cut from one of the coppice compartments on the reserve. This was a great opportunity for Phoenix to get some hands-on experience of practical work that will directly benefit the wildlife on the site.

The catering team slaved over hot barbecue coals to provide wonderful hot refreshments.

Food seems to taste even better outdoors in the sunshine after some hard work!

Construction of a Hibernation Hotel has almost become a Macclesfield Wildlife Explorers signature activity!
It was great fun filling the gaps with sticks, straw and leaves after our chief architect (Leader Darren)
put together incredible foundations for a luxury winter retreat.

The reserve Education Team will use the Hibernation hotel to illustrate how we can help small creatures
and invertebrates survive over the winter and maintain a great food source for birds!

A fantastic day's work enjoyed by all.
