Caring for garden birds - making bird feeders
Wednesday 24th November 2010
Leaders from Macclesfield Wildlife Explorers visited Congleton Beavers and Cubs Groups talk about caring for Garden Birds.
We learned that birds need food, fresh water to drink and bathe, shelter and somewhere safe to nest.
The Cubs and Beavers made pine cone bird feeders and played games to illustrate how human activity can influence the survival of wild birds in different habitats.
Susan's Dough Recipe for Pine Cone Feeders
2 measures of plain flour to 1 measure of lard.
Rub together to form a dough (just like you do for pastry) but remember DO NOT add water.
Knead in some mixed bird seed, then press dough into the spaces in a dry pine cone.
TOP TIP It is best to use lard at room temperature not straight from the fridge.
(Remember to tie a string to your pine cone before you begin so you can hang it up in the garden).
