Big Schools Birdwatch 2012
Enthusiastic pupils from Terra Nova School's Nursery and Reception classes
had great fun taking part in the RSPB's Big Schools' Birdwatch 2012.

As well as learning about the different kinds of birds that visit school grounds,
we found out how to count birds in a special way for our Big Schools' Birdwatch survey.
When we went outside to count birds we took it in turns to use binoculars to find birds
and looked through a telescope to get great views of them.

During our Birdwatch we got a great view of a friendly Robin who sang beautifully from his perch in some ivy.

We saw great tits, blue tits, a Blackbird, Chaffinches, House sparrows, and some Crows.
We also saw three types of thrush: Song thrush, Mistle thrush and three Fieldfares.

The best spot of the day had to be three fabulous Nuthatches searching for food amongst some logs
and peforming their unique ability to climb up and (head first) down the trunks of trees.

In our last session we also saw a jay flying into the woodland with a fabulous flash of blue on its wings.

Volunteer RSPB Wildlife Explorer Leaders were on hand to explain how to use binoculars
and 'spotting telescope' safely, and to help with bird identification.
