Big Schools Birdwatch 2012
Leaders drove through rain and thick fog to help with the
Big Schools' Birdwatch at Kettleshulme St James.

Luckily when we arrived at the school the weather brightened up and the wind died down a little to give much better conditions than expected for our Big Schools' Birdwatch.

The pupils and staff were all really enthusiastic about taking part in the event.

The older children have been taking part in the Birdwatch for a number of years and their knowledge of survey techniques, safety considerations and bird recognition skills were really impressive.

Top spots were an incredible 26 Jackdaws at one time and three beautiful Greenfinches.

We also saw Carrion crows, Chaffinches, a Magpie, a Wood pigeon, Blue tits, Great tits and a Coal tit.

We heard the distinctive call of a Great spotted woodpecker calling from the trees.

Volunteer RSPB Wildlife Explorer Leaders were on hand to explain how to use binoculars
and 'spotting telescope' safely, and to help with bird identification.
