Big Schools Birdwatch 2012
Leaders joined Friends of Victoria Park and staff from Puss Bank School
to host a Big Schools' Birdwatch 2012 event at Victoria Park
on Fence Avenue in Macclesfield.

Unpromising weather conditions did nothing to dampen our enthusiasm
and around 180 people braved the rain and cold for a super morning birdwatching.

The children watched birds from the park bandstand and learned how to use binoculars and telescopes.

In all we recorded 18 different species - a great total for a site in the middle of town.

Top spots were a Goldcrest (Britain's smallest bird), a Nuthatch
and a flock of 18 Redwings (winter visitors from Scandinavia).

Thanks to the Friends of Victoria Park and staff at Puss Bank School
for their help co-ordinating this event.

Volunteer RSPB Wildlife Explorer Leaders were on hand to explain how to use binoculars
and 'spotting telescopes' safely, and to help with bird identification.
