Big Schools Birdwatch 2012
On a bright and mild morning, Rainow Schools Big Garden Birdwatch
attracted lots of excitement. The group divided up so that everyone
had a chance to take part in some classroom activities,
watch birds on the feeders from the conservatory
and then complete a birdwatching walk in the school grounds.

First spot of the day was a buzzard soaring over the school grounds looking for food.

We saw excellent numbers of Goldfinches and Great tits, Blue tits, Coal tits and a Greenfinch.

We were also delighted to see a Mistle thrush and a pair of Jays.

Most welcome spot of the day was three House sparrows
marking the return of a species that hasn't been noted at the school since 2007.

Volunteer RSPB Wildlife Explorer Leaders were on hand to explain how to use binoculars
and 'spotting telescope' safely, and to help with bird identification.
