Big Schools Birdwatch 2012
A bright but cold day for the RSPB Big Schools' Birdwatch
at Dean Oaks Primary School.

Dean Oaks is another of our schools that benefits greatly from feeding the birds.

Even though it was very cold the sunshine seemed to bring out the birds.
We had fun learning to focus our binoculars and we got really clear views of different birds
using the telescopes.

The clever Jackdaws had worked out how to get peanuts from the feeders.
Unfortunately, so had the Grey squirrels.

We soon became practised at recognising the different tits on the feeders and the larger Blackbirds, Jackdaws and Black-headed gulls on the field.

We got a great view of a Carrion crow devouring a huge slice of bread on a neighbour's roof!

Both classes that took part were very good at guessing the order of the
Top 11 birds in the Big Schools' Birdwatch results for Cheshire from 2011.
Of those 11 birds the only one missing from our Dean Oaks bird list for 2012 was the House sparrow.

Volunteer RSPB Wildlife Explorer Leaders were on hand to explain how to use binoculars
and 'spotting telescope' safely, and to help with bird identification.
