Phoenix Group visit to
Nick Baker's Weird Creatures show
at Buxton Opera House
Saturday 21st April 2012

Macclesfield RSPB Phoenix Group and their families visited Buxton Opera House
to see TV presenter and naturalist Nick Baker's Weird Creatures show,
and to meet Nick Baker.

Nick Bakers Weird Creatures show

Baker, describing himself these days as a 'professional amateur naturalist' gave the group a intriguing insight into some of the world's most unusual and elusive creatures based on his experiences filming the
Weird Creatures TV series. It was a truly fascinating and entertaining evening.

We now know how to avoid being savaged by a Silky Anteater, how to locate a Hell Bender under a rock
in an Appalachian river and we can all identify a Pink Fairy Armadillo by its bottom alone!

Before the show, during the interval, and at the end of the evening Nick, kindly spent time
with members of the group chatting about his experiences and allowing lots of photos!

Nick spoke of his childhood inspirations Alfred Russel Wallace and Colonel Fawcett with great affection.
His own infectious enthusiasm for all creatures weird and wonderful will, I'm sure,
be inspiring a whole new generation of naturalists.

Nick's recommended reading list included:
Alfred Russel Wallace: The Malay Archipelago
Colonel Percy Fawcett: Exploration Fawcett

(Accounts of Fawcett's own life and adventures are worth a quick investigation too.
Some credit him as being the 'real Indiana Jones')
