Family Bird Race
Saturday 2nd June 2012

Tittesworth Water was the venue for our End of Year Bird Race.
As an introduction to the Severn Trent site the Group spent some time brainstorming water saving ideas - for a comprehensive list click here for Water Saving Tips.

Two teams set out on different paths to see how many different species of birds they could spot in an hour and a half. Positive identifications were allowed for bird song as well as visual confirmations.
Luckily both teams had expert Leaders to guide those of us with less discerning hearing!

Team 2 surprised by the site of a stream!

Both teams recorded a fantastic range of woodland, farmland and inland water birds.
The end results were close - 38 species vs 42 with Team 1 triumphant.
The teams scored a fantastic total of 50 species when their lists were combined.

The competition was followed by a celebration picnic in the shelters where House Sparrows were busy feeding their demanding young. At the water's edge we were treated to close-up views of house martins, sand martins and swallows with a whole host of garden birds and ducks visiting to take advantage of the picnic crumbs.
