Grow Wild pilot project
Heritage Walk Macclesfield

Saturday 4th May 2013

Wildlife Explorers were delighted to take part in a pilot wildflower project
at Heritage Walk on Churchill Way in the middle of Macclesfield.

The Grow Wild pilot is a project funded by the BIG Lottery fund and led by Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
Grow Wild will be an exciting campaign that aims to bring people together across the UK
and make a difference to where we live by planting wildflowers.
After completion of the pilot project this year the main launch of the campaign
will roll out across the country next spring.

Volunteers from Food4Macc and Macclesfield Guild helped prepare a suitable area
on the site which has been transformed over the last couple of years.

On the day we prepared the soil for sowing.

We then tested the soil for for nutrient levels and pH.

After that we scattered a wildflower seed mix.
A heavy rain shower ensured we didn't have to water the seeds!

The group are testing wildflower seed growing kits
and will be participating in the Grow Wild digital community
where different groups will share their experience online.

Wildlife Explorers Group Leader Tina Hanak said,
"It is always very exciting to be involved with initiatives that can inspire
young people and families to take positive steps for nature in their communities.
The enthusiastic response we have seen so far bodes very well for the future success of the project.
Our members are already making suggestions of sites in town where we could run the project next year!"
